1.MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY(MIT)-UNITED STATES

         

                         Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (MIT) is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.  MIT is a private land-grant research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT was established in 1861 in response to the industrialisation of the United States, MIT adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instructions in applied science and engineering.                   Stanford University was founded in1885 by Leland Stanford and Jane Stanford, “to promote public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization.”In 1884 Leland and Jane Stanford lost their only child Leland Jr to typhoid fever. They decided to build a university as the most fitting memorial. Leland Stanford Junior university(still its legal name) opened in 1891. The Stanford and founding president David Starr Jordan aimed for their university to be nonsectarian, co-educational and affordable to produce cultures and useful graduates, and to teach both traditional liberal arts and technology and engineering that were already changing America.

 

                     Half of the applicants accepted to Stanford have an SAT score between 1440 to 1570 or an ACT score of 32 and 35. Admission officials consider students’ GPA to be an important academic factor. But for the 2021-2022 admission cycle, Stanford will not require SAT or ACT scores for the first year or transfer applicants due to the challenges created by the covid-19 pandemic including limited access to admission testing worldwide and are extending this year’s test optional policy to a second year. Stanford follows a quarter system with the autumn quarter usually beginning in late September and the spring quarter ending in the mid June. The full time four year undergraduate program has an arts and science focus with high graduate student coexistence. Stanford is one of the most successful universities in creating companies and licensing its inventions to existing companies. The university is described as having a strong venture culture in which students are encouraged and often funded to launch their own companies.

                             Harvard University was established in 1636 and named for its first benefactor John Harvard. Harvard is a private research university.                         California Institute of Technology(Caltech) is an  independent, privately supported institution located in Pasadena, California. Earlier it was founded as Throop university in 1891 in Pasadena, California and renamed California Institute of Technology in 1920 Thomas F Rosenbaum is the president of Caltech. The mission of California Institute of Technology is to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education. They provide 28 undergraduate options and 30 graduate options. Caltech has many academic divisions like Biology and Biological Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Applied Science, Geology and Planetary Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Physics Mathematics and Astronomy. 

    

                        Admission to Caltech is extremely rigorous and requires the highest test scores in the nation. Students can choose from 28 options spread across six academic divisions. Caltech’s program not only builds students expertise in a core area of study and research but requires a considerable depth and exposure to basic science maths and social science overall as the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary research, business and society require the ability to make connections across disciplines. Caltech’s upcoming online learning opportunities will be available through Coursera and edX, educational technology platforms that offer online university level courses in a wide range of disciplines to a world wide audience at no charge. Caltech’s online offerings do not provide Caltech course credit. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent before beginning the graduate study.                            As the oldest university in the English speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. 7.UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE-UNITED

                                The University of Cambridge also known as Cambridge University is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. It was founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry II. Cambridge is the second oldest university in the English speaking world and world’s fourth oldest surviving university, as well as most prestigious academic institutions in the world. Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which includes 31 semi autonomous constituent colleges and over 150 academic departments, facilities and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. Cambridge does not have a main campus, its colleges and centre facilities are scattered throughout the city. 

 

                           Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge is organised around the weekly small group supervisions in the college, a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university facilities and departments. Postgraduate teaching provided predominantly centrally. Undergraduate applications to Cambrigde must be made through UCAS in the time of early deadline, currently mid october in the year before starting. The academic year is divided into three academic terms, determined by the statutes of university; Michaelmas lasts from October to December, Lent term from January to March and Easter term from April to June. 

 

8.IMPERIAL COLLEGE LANDON-UNITED 

                      KINGDOM                           

                 

                 Imperial college London is a world top ten university with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.                            The University of Chicago has been an urban research university since 1890. John D Rockefeller is the founder and Robert J Zimmer is the president of the University of Chicago. Their motto is “ Let knowledge grow from more to more, and so be human life enriched”. They provide 52 majors and 41 minors in the undergraduate college. There are 5 divisions and 6 professional schools for graduate study. Their campus is located in Chicago’s Hyde park near Lake Michigan. The university manages Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for the Department of Energy, has direct oversight of the Marine Biological Laboratory and is a founding partner of the Giant Magellan Telescope project. They have 92 Nobel prize winners. 

 

                               The University of Chicago’s research has led to such breakthroughs as discovering the links between cancer and genetics, establishing revolutionary theories of economics and developing tools to produce reliably excellent urban schooling. They generate new insights for the benefits of present and future generations with their national and affiliated laboratories. The university runs on a quarter system in which the academic year is divided into four terms, Summer(June-August), Autumn(September-December), Winter(January-March), and Spring(April-June). Full time undergraduate students take three to four courses every quarter for approximately eleven weeks before their quarterly academic breaks. The school typically begins in late September and ends in mid June. They are one of the first US universities with continuing education, University of Chicago offers non degree programs, spanning business, public policy and a wide range of professional and liberal arts. 

 

10.UCL(UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON)-                                                          

                UNITED KINGDOM

 

                              University College London is a public research university located in London, United Kingdom. UCL was established in 1826 as London University. UCL was the first university to be established in London and first in England to be entirely secure and to admit students regardless of their religion.

Their motto is “Let all come who by merit deserve the most reward.” UCL has its main campus in the Bloomsbury area of central London with a number of institutes and teaching hospitals. UCL is a member of several academic organisations. Their academics discovered five of the naturally occurring noble gases, discovered hormones, invented vacuum tubes and made several foundational advances in modern statistics.

 

                                UCG was one of  the first universities in the UK to make use of A grade at A level for admissions to courses including Economics, European social and political studies, Law, Mathematics, Medicine, Theoretical Physics and Psychology. 11.NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE(NUS)-    SINGAPORE

 

                       National University of Singapore was started as a modest medical school with 23 students in 1905, founded by a determined group of businessmen led by Tan Jiak Kim, to serve the needs of the local community. The National University of Singapore aspires to be a vital community of academics, researchers, staff, students and alumni working together in a spirit of innovation and enterprise for a better world. Their vision is to a leading global university shaping the future and the mission is to educate, inspire and transform. NUS has a semester based modular system for conducting courses. It adopts features of the British system such as small group teaching on top of regular two hours lectures and the American system. Students may transfer between courses within their first two semesters. Other cross disciplinary initiatives study programmes include double degree undergraduate degrees in Arts, Social, Science and Engineering and Business and Law.  

 

                             Students can choose from their wide-ranging multi-disciplinary curricula, including 70 joint, concurrent and double degree courses established with the world’s leading universities. Among the major research focuses at NUS are biomedical and life sciences, physical science, engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology, material science and engineering, infocommunication and infotechnology, humanities and social science, and defence related research. 12.PRINCETON UNIVERSITY- UNITED STATES

 

         Princeton University was founded in 1746 in Elizabeth as the college of New Jersey. Princeton is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Their motto is “Under God’s Power She Flourishes”.  The institution moved to Newark in 1747, then to the current site nine years later. It was renamed Princeton University in 1896. Princeton provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social science, natural sciences and engineering. Undergraduates fulfill general education requirements, choose among a wide variety of courses and pursue departmental concentration and interdisciplinary certificate programs. Required independent work is a hallmark of undergraduate education at Princeton. Students graduate with either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Engineering. 13.NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY,SINGAPORE(NTU)- SINGAPORE

 

                         Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a research intensive public university. Nanyang Technological Institute(NTI) was set up on 1 August 1981 with a charter to train three quarters of Singapore’s engineers. When NTI started in 1982, it had a total student population of 582 in three engineering disciplines . By 1990 the institute’s student population had grown to 6832. In 1991, NTI merged with the National Institute of Education(NIE) to form the Nanyang Technological University(NTU). NTU became autonomous in 2006. Now they have 33,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the college of Engineering, Business, Science and Humanities, Arts and Social Science and its graduate college. NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine was established jointly with Imperial College London. NTU’s campus is frequently listed among the top 15 most beautiful university campuses in the world.

 

14.ECOLE POLYTECHNIQUE FÉDÉRALE DE LAUSANNE(EPFL)- SWITZERLAND

 

                       EPFL is one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions. It is located in Switzerland. EPFL started from 1853 with eleven students for a two-year curriculum. At that time they included many subjects like chemistry, maths, physics, drawing, architecture and civil engineering. By 2002, EPFL changed its structure. It’s departments gave way to big schools to strengthen trans-disciplinary collaborations. Like every public university in Switzerland, EPFL is obliged to grant admission to every Swiss resident who took the high school certificate recognised by Swiss Confederation. However, International students are required to have a final grade average of 80% or above the maximum grade of the upper secondary school national system. During the first year of study the student must pass a block examination of all the courses taken during the first year at the end of cycle. If the weighted average is insufficient, the student is required to retake the entire first year of coursework if they wish to continue their studies at school.

 

                            As at all universities in Switzerland, the academic year is divided into two semesters. Their language centre offers language and communication modules for French, German, Italian and English to enable learners to participate more effectively in academic, professional and social situations. Their core mission is training the next generation of engineers, scientists and architects.                                Tsinghua offers world class undergraduate and graduate programs taught in Chinese and English. Tsinghua offers 82 undergraduate majors and 18 second degree majors, namely, science, engineering, literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, medicine, and art. They offer bachelor’s degrees with duration of 4 years except for Architecture and Sculpture which are 5 years and Clinical Medicine which is 8 years. Edinburgh University was founded by the Edinburgh Town Council, the university began as a college of law. The central campus is spread around numerous squares and streets in Edinburgh Southside with some buildings in Old Town. The college of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest of the three colleges of University of Edinburgh. The University of Edinburgh offers a wide range of free online MOOC(Massive Open Online Course) courses on three global platforms Coursera, Edx, FutureLearn. There are a number of bodies and committees which govern and advise the University. The University court is the university’s governing body and is the legal persona of the university.                             Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The university was founded in 1898. Peking University was originally known as the Imperial University of Peking. It was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has been a leading institution of higher education in China since its establishment. Their motto is ensuring quality and pursuing excellence.  It also served as the highest administration for education at the beginning of its founding. Peking faculties include 48 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 9 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 21 members of the Third Word Academy of Sciences.                            The Hong Kong University of science and technology is a public research university in Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong. The university was founded in 1991. Their mission is to advance learning and knowledge through teaching and research particularly, in science, technology, engineering, management and business studies, at the postgraduate level, to assist in the economic and social development of Hongkong. Vision is to be a leading university with significant international impact and strong local commitment. They have a School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Business and Management, School of Humanities and Social Science, Interdisciplinary Program Office, HKUST Jockey Club Institute of Advanced Study(IAS), HKUST Institute of public policy. The logo of the university is in several ways symbolic to the institution. Lyrically they visualise the golden head of wisdom over the open book of knowledge. Between the arms holding the book can be seen as the flask representing science. Alternatively it is a transmission tower representing engineering and technology or communication and management. And a sun radiating gold that is a very traditional golden colour, over an ocean representing Hongkong.

The university was formed in 2004 by the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and Victoria University of Manchester. Their origin as England’s first civic university are closely linked to Manchester’s development as the world’s first industrial city. Manchester was the world’s first modern industrial city. The University of Manchester is a major center for research and a member of the Russell Group of leading British resource universities. The University of Manchester was given a silver award in the 2017 Teaching and Excellence Framework(TEF). The University of Manchester is the second largest university in the UK and the largest single site university.

The university was divided into four facilities: faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, faculty of Science and Engineering, faculty of Humanities, faculty of Finances.

 

29.NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY- UNITED

                                        Northwestern University was founded in 1851. It is a private research university formed to serve the northwest territory. 30.UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY(UCB)- UNITED STATES.

 

                              The University of California was founded in 1863, with a vision in the State Constitution of a university that would “contribute even more than California’s gold to the glory and happiness of advancing generations”. They provide 184 academic departments and programs. From 10 faculty members, 40 students and three fields of study at the time of its founding, UC Berkeley has grown to more than 1600 faculty 35000 students, and over 350 degree programs in 130 academic departments and 80 interdisciplinary research units. Berkeley hosts many leading research institutes including, the Mathematical Science Research Institute and the Space Sciences Laboratory. Berkeley is a large, primerely residential tier one research university with a majority of its enrollment in undergraduate programs but also offering a comprehensive doctoral program. The university has been accelerated by Western Association of schools and colleges. The university operates on a semester calendar.
